Build robots for the long walk.

Kscale Robotics builds autonomous mobile robots for work that is repetitive, physically demanding and tedious, yet essential, so people can focus on creative, strategic and meaningful work. We're early, hands-on and building in Sweden.

Real routes, real peopleBusy indoor spaces, people on the move, work that can't wait. Robotics that has to work calmly around people.
Early, hands-on stageOur robots are in development and we're looking for our first pilot partners. You'll help shape the product from the first route.
Engineered in SwedenKscale Robotics AB is building in the Nordics, one route at a time: get it right, then grow.

Open role

Senior Robotics Engineer, Autonomous Systems

About the role

As our senior robotics engineer, you'll own our robots' sensing and autonomy: from choosing the sensors that let a mobile robot see clearly in busy, glass-walled indoor spaces, to the navigation that moves calmly among people and stops exactly where a person takes over. You'll set the technical direction, take the robot from prototype to field tests on real routes, and help build the engineering team.

What you'll do

  • Own the sensor suite end to end: requirements, selection, placement, integration, calibration and validation.
  • Evaluate and select sensors: 2D/3D LiDAR (mechanical and solid-state), depth, stereo and ToF cameras, IMU, wheel encoders, ultrasonic, bumper and cliff sensors, and safety-rated sensors such as safety laser scanners.
  • Make the trade-offs explicit: range, field of view, resolution, behaviour on glass, reflective floors and sunlight indoors, latency, compute load, power, cost, supply chain and certification.
  • Design sensor placement and coverage on the robot body, including around any payload and for people close to the robot.
  • Set up intrinsic and extrinsic calibration and time synchronisation, for example PTP or hardware triggering.
  • Design the sensor-fusion architecture, its failure modes and the redundancy needed to operate safely around people.
  • Benchmark candidate sensors and vendors on real routes, and define the perception and compute budget on NVIDIA Jetson.
  • Lead navigation, mapping and localisation (ROS 2, Nav2) within one mapped zone: calm, predictable paths through dense crowds, and boundaries the robot never crosses.
  • Take the robot from prototype to field deployment on pilot routes, with simulation, test tooling, logging and remote assistance.
  • Set technical direction, review designs and code, and mentor future hires.

What we're looking for

  • 3+ years building and shipping autonomous mobile robots, with field deployments.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in sensor selection, integration and fusion for mobile robots.
  • Deep knowledge of ROS 2 and Nav2, and of SLAM and localisation on real robots.
  • Strong C++ and Python on Linux.
  • A track record of taking robots from prototype to field deployment.
  • Technical leadership: you set the architecture, review others' work and mentor engineers.
  • A safety-first mindset for robots that work around people.

Robot tech stack experience

Sensors & hardware
2D/3D LiDAR (mechanical and solid-state), depth, stereo and ToF cameras, IMU, wheel encoders, ultrasonic, bumper and cliff sensors, safety laser scanners
Calibration & time sync
Intrinsic and extrinsic calibration (for example Kalibr), PTP, hardware triggering
Middleware & control
ROS 2, Nav2, ros2_control
Mapping & localisation
SLAM (slam_toolbox, Cartographer), AMCL, EKF sensor fusion (robot_localization)
Perception
OpenCV, PyTorch, person detection and tracking
Planning
Path planning and obstacle avoidance in dynamic crowds, behaviour trees
Edge compute
NVIDIA Jetson, CUDA, TensorRT
Simulation
Gazebo, Isaac Sim
Software & operations
C++, Python, Linux, Docker, Git and CI, fleet monitoring, remote assistance, over-the-air updates

You don't need all of these. Deep expertise in sensing and navigation matters most.

Nice to have

  • Safety-rated sensors and functional safety: awareness of ISO 13849 and IEC 61508, and of service and mobile-robot standards such as ISO 13482 and ISO 3691-4.
  • EMC and hardware bring-up.
  • Working with sensor and hardware suppliers.
  • Human-robot interaction, social navigation or people-following.
  • Navigation in large indoor spaces: multi-zone maps, automatic doors or elevators.
  • Experience from an early-stage startup.

Education & other skills

  • BSc or MSc in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics or a similar field, or equivalent senior industry experience.
  • Ownership from prototype to a field-tested solution, including hands-on testing at pilot sites.
  • Clear written and spoken English. Swedish is a plus.
  • Comfortable with the pace and ambiguity of an early-stage startup.
